The Miami Dolphins spent the week up in Tampa conducting a couple of joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They will end the week on Friday with a game against the Buccaneers. It gave both teams a chance to work against someone else in practice, rather than just facing their own teammates and coaching staffs, then get to see them one more time at full game speed.

This week for the Dolphins featured some changes, as quarterback Josh Rosen and wide receiver Preston Williams saw extended repetitions with the first team offense. Running back Kenyan Drake has been sidelined with a foot injury, giving Kalen Ballage more playing time as the top running back.

On defense, the linebackers continue to deal with injuries, and Minkah Fitzpatrick has been seeing more playing time as a strong safety/in-the-box support. The Bucs will play their first game inside Raymond James Stadium this year on Friday, when they take on the Miami Dolphins at home. Practicing against a different team helps to break up the monotony of training camp and also allows the first and second teams more reps during practice. The first-team offense went against the Miami first-team defense in team periods and vice versa. The reps can also be a little bit more physical, knowing those aren’t your teammates on the other side of the line.

“With as much [practice] as our one’s are getting today and tomorrow, I don’t think it’s necessary probably to play them much in the ball game – maybe a few more plays than last week,” Head Coach Bruce Arians said on his plan for Friday’s game. “If things go as well as they did early offensively, it’ll probably be the same. Defensively, the same – just because of the work we’re getting this week. If we weren’t working together this week, we’d probably play 20 plays [or] 25.”

This year also includes a live-stream option for all four games for the very first time. The stream is available through the Buccaneers Official App and online at Buccaneers.com/live. It is subject to market restrictions and available in the same markets with television coverage. Out-of-market fans can watch on NFL Game Pass.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins got together for another 150-minute joint practice at the AdventHealth Training Center on Wednesday and hit all the usual marks: one-on-ones, seven-on-seven passing drills, a field goal period, and so on. Perhaps the most entertaining of the 11 practice periods were the eighth one and the final one because they put the players in specific and high-stress game situations and came closest to mimicking an actual game.

Bears vs. Giants Preview
The NFL preseason is hitting the halfway mark for most teams and things are starting to get more serious as the season approaches. Starters typically see more time in the second game of the preseason, usually maxing out their reps in the third game. Teams try to find a balance between staying sharp for the season and avoiding injuries, but it’s easier said than done.

The Bears dropped their preseason opener to the Panthers 23-13. However, rookie running back David Montgomery was a bright spot. He ran for 16 yards on three attempts with a touchdown and caught three passes for 30 yards. Head coach Matt Nagy has hinted that Montgomery’s reps might be limited for the rest of the preseason.

“Put it this way: I’m going to protect David from David,” Nagy said. “Take that for what it’s worth.”

While Bears starting QB Mitchell Trubisky didn’t throw any passes, he did get in the game against the Panthers with three consecutive handoffs. Nagy said it was to keep the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft “mentally prepared.”

Veteran backup Chase Daniels ran the show for the Bears against Carolina. He completed his passes at a high clip, connecting on 11 of his 13 throws for 120 yards.

The Giants won their first tilt of the preseason 31-22 against the Jets with impressive quarterback play. Rookie Daniel Jones might have made the biggest impact, albeit it was only for one series. Jones hit all five of his passes and tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Bennie Fowler III.

Coach Pat Shurmur said that despite the strong performance from the Giants’ rookie, there is no QB controversy brewing — although that might not stop Giants fans from clamoring for Jones to replace 38-year-old, two-time Super Bowl champ Eli Manning.

“Listen, we’re not going to play the ‘what ifs,’ and I would say this: Nothing has changed,” he said. “This is the first game and I expect Daniel to play well, I expect him to go out and improve, and for the people that don’t know him, impress them. That’s what we expect from him. We expect that from Eli, we expect that from everybody. So our expectations for him have not changed, and in my mind our situation hasn’t changed.”

The NFL season officially begins on Thursday, Sept. 5 as NFC North Rivals Green Bay and Chicago face off.

The Giants open the season against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 8.

Bills vs Panthers Preview
The NFL preseason is hitting the halfway mark for most teams and things are starting to get more serious as the season approaches. Starters typically see more time in the second game of the preseason, usually maxing out their reps in the third game. Teams try to find a balance between staying sharp for the season and avoiding injuries, but it’s easier said than done.

The Bills won their preseason debut against the Colts, coming away with a 24-16 victory. Starter Josh Allen (6-11, 66 yards) but Matt Barkley got the majority of reps at quarterback, impressing with 126 yards and touchdown strike to Cam Phillips.

The highlight of the game, however, came when former professional rugby player Christian Wade took the first carry of his career to the house, going 65 yards in the fourth quarter for the score.

“I wasn’t surprised,” Wade said. “I think everyone else was surprised that happened on my first touch. It was an incredible moment for me.”

The Panthers and Bills are holding joint practices this week, but Panthers head coach Ron Rivera doesn’t expect any funny business.

“We’re not here to fight,” Rivera told reporters. “That’s bull. What we’re here to do is learn from each other and help each other win. That’s the most important opportunity to come out of this.”

Panthers rookie kicker Joey Slye was the hero in Carolina’s 23-13 victory over the Bears. Slye hit field goals of 42, 55 and 29 yards in the win. It’s not likely Slye will take the starting job from Graham Gano, but he surely put himself on the radar of other teams.

“He handled it really well,” Rivera said. “We had an opportunity for him to kick a 55-yarder. During practice, he hit a 60-something yarder. So I thought this was well within his range and it was kind of fun to watch him kick it.”

Quarterback Cam Newton and linebacker Luke Kuechly — the team’s brightest stars on both sides of the ball — are on the mend from injuries. Newton had offseason shoulder surgery, while the Panthers have kept Kuechly’s injury under wraps.

The 100th NFL season officially begins on Thursday, Sept. 5 as NFC North Rivals Green Bay and Chicago face off.

The Panthers open their season against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 8. The Bills get their season underway against the Jets.

Young Dolphins quarterback’s Josh Rosen’s poor body language has followed him to Miami, prompting a meeting with head coach Brian Flores. Things are touch-and-go for Tampa Bay, too, as head coach Bruce Arians recently claimed he could “easily cut” 15 more players after trimming the roster from 90 to 75. On the bright side, wide receiver Chris Goodwin seems to be a breakout candidate this season, and has his latest chance to show out against the Fins.

More importantly, Daniel Jones looked impressive in his first outing in a blue jersey.

The Giants’ top pick in this year’s draft played just one series, but completed five out of five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown in a 31-22 win over the New York Jets.

The Giants’ decision to trade up to number six to select the Duke quarterback raised a few eyebrows, particularly as the franchise passed on the chance of selecting a signal-caller in the first round a year ago, when the talent on offer in the position was a lot higher.

.@Daniel_Jones10 put up a PERFECT passer rating in his first NFL action: 5-for-5, 67 yards, 1 TD.
Jones, however, looked exactly like the player the Giants hoped to draft. Clearly, it would be premature to judge the rookie based on a single series in a preseason game, but there are reasons for Big Blue to be optimistic.

Next up for the Giants is an all-NFC affair against the Chicago Bears, who visit the MetLife Stadium on Friday night.

The Bears made the playoffs last season but lost 23-13 at home against the Carolina Panthers last week. Coach Matt Nagy rested most of his starters, with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky on the field for just one series, in which he didn’t throw a pass.

The Bears head coach placed a much bigger emphasis on the quest for a new kicker, with Elliott Fry and Eddy Pineiro battling it out for the role.

Fry made a 43-yard field goal and his lone PAT attempt, while Pineiro landed a 23-yard chip shot but missed a 48-yarder.

Raiders vs Cardinals : Oakland Raiders vs. Arizona Cardinals in NFL Preseason: The Oakland Raiders had a successful 2019 debut but that doesn’t mean all was perfect – here are a few things that must improve as they head to Arizona to take on the Cardinals. The Oakland Raiders played what is likely the franchise’s final home game in the stadium now known as the RingCentral Coliseum on Saturday, beating the Los Angeles Rams 14-3. There were some fantastic moments in the game but overall, it was — well — a preseason game.

The Silver and Black are 24 hours away from their second preseason game of the year, and it’ll be their first time on the road in 2019. The Oakland Raiders are packing their bags and venturing south to Phoenix where they’ll take on the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium. Saturday, the Raiders defeated the NFC Champion Los Angeles Rams at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum 14-3, and several rookies had an opportunity to experience their first live NFL action.

Head Coach Jon Gruden hinted during his press conference Tuesday that we might see a few more veterans take the field on Thursday, but we’ll just have to wait and see who he was referring to. Until then, make sure you know how to watch or listen to the Raiders’ second preseason bout of the year.

The Oakland Raiders open the 2019 preseason with a home contest against the Los Angeles Rams at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 5 p.m. PT. The matchup follows a week that features two joint practices against the Rams’ ball club at the Silver and Black’s training camp home at the Napa Valley Marriott in Napa, Calif. After two weeks of training camp, Head Coach Jon Gruden and the Raiders will be- gin a preseason slate that showcases three NFC West teams and one NFC North club. The squad opens with the Rams and will then travel to play the Arizona Cardinals in a nationally-televised matchup on ESPN, before heading to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to face the Green Bay Packers in Week 3, concluding the preseason schedule on the road against the Seattle Seahawks for the 14th consecutive year.

Coach Gruden, now in his second year of his second stint as the head coach for the Silver and Black, returns to the sideline once again to bounce back from a 4-12 season in 2018. QB Derek Carr, entering his sixth sea- son, will again be at the helm of the offense after a year that saw him hit career marks in passing yards (4,049), completions (381), completion per- centage (68.9) and yards per attempt (7.3 avg.). Carr set a franchise record by throwing 332 consecutive passes without an interception, a streak that ranks third-best in NFL history, and also set an NFL record for most com- pletions (1,759) through a player’s first five seasons in the league. Added to the offense is four-time All-Pro WR Antonio Brown, who comes off a 2018 campaign in which he led the NFL with 15 receiving touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, DT Maurice Hurst looks to build upon a strong rookie campaign after leading the team in sacks, with the help of newcomers LB Vontaze Burfict and S Lamarcus Joyner. The team will also look for strong contributions from their three 2019 first-round selections: S Johnathan Abram, DE Clelin Ferrell and RB Josh Jacobs.

The Raiders look to improve to 2-0 in the preseason after winning last week’s opener against the Rams. Not too many starters will see extensive playing time, but plenty of players will need to step up to earn roster spots.

Six Raiders to keep an eye on during preseason game vs. Cardinals

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Raiders haven’t practiced much between last Saturday’s preseason opener and Thursday’s second showing at Arizona. They had one full session and some walkthroughs, but progress and production still are expected from a group firmly on the roster bubble as we work through the preseason.

Head coach Jon Gruden said some veteran starters will play against the Cardinals, though probably not much. That includes one prominent player on this list of six to keep an eye on during this preseason contest against the Cardinals.

QB Derek Carr

The team’s starting quarterback should play a little bit here in Arizona, but it might look more like a cameo than a prolonged stretch. Every throw will be overly scrutinized, as Carr’s efforts always are, but it’ll show whether he has found sync with receivers not named Antonio Brown.

He has developed chemistry with Tyrell Williams and J.J. Nelson and, if Carr’s going to play, it only makes sense that the first-team offensive line and prominent skill players join him.

Carr told NBC Sports Bay Area that he’s quarterbacking as well as he ever has in this training camp. A solid, short performance should build momentum through the preseason and help him prep for what should be a big year for No. 4.

DT Anthony Rush

The undrafted defensive tackle, who wasn’t signed until training camp, has really impressed since joining the interior rotation. He had three tackles in the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams, and every tackle was either for a loss or no gain.

He’s pushing hard for a roster spot inside, and P.J. Hall’s is vulnerable after struggling to stay healthy and perform well in training camp. Maurice Hurst, Johnathan Hankins and Justin Ellis are roster locks. Ethan Westbrooks has a leg up on another spot, and Rush could fit into a fifth tackle spot if they keep that many interior guys. If the Raiders only keep four, then Rush, Hall and Westbrooks will battle for the final opening.

Rush has a real shot a job if he continues to shine.

“Anthony Rush is a 340-pound guy that really took advantage of his snaps [against the Rams],” Gruden said. “He’s only been here eight or nine days. Caused some tackles for loss, made a couple of plays and pushed the pocket pretty good. We like him. We’re going to try to keep working him into great shape and looking forward to see him play here against Arizona.”

WR Ryan Grant

The veteran receiver was largely invisible in camp’s early stretch, outshined by rookie slot man Hunter Renfrow and other talented rookies. Then Grant showed up in the Rams game, reminding everyone he can be a smooth, reliable receiver able to contribute to a talented receiver corps.

Finding a roster spot might be more of a challenge than originally expected, but Gruden likes him. Gruden’s brother loved working with Grant in Washington, and that’s a point in his favor.

Grant must continue to produce in these preseason games to fight for a roster spot against several quality options of varied skill sets.

S Curtis Riley

The veteran has worked behind the three top safeties options most of camp. Johnathan Abram, Karl Joseph and Erik Harris seems to have roles locked up, but Riley has experience playing deep and has the veteran knowledge Gruden likes in that spot. He started alongside Abram in the Rams game — Joseph was held out to preserve health — and received some first team reps with Joseph this week.

He must convince the Raiders to keep four safeties, something that seems unlikely considering slot cornerback Lamarcus Joyner is an excellent safety, but don’t count the former New York Giant out just yet. Solid games could keep him in the mix this summer.

OLs Denver Kirkland and Jordan Devey

The Raiders must survive the first quarter of the season at least without Gabe Jackson, who injured his knee during joint practices against the Rams.

Gruden said Devey has the first crack at that right guard spot, though Kirkland’s auditioning for that role as well. Devey will be a super sub at guard and center and thus should have a roster spot secured, but Gruden must feel comfortable with him or Kirkland at the right guard position moving forward. Solid performances at right guard from one or both of those guys would keep general manager Mike Mayock’s eyes from wandering to the waiver wire or street free agents for Jackson’s stand-in

In week two of the preseason we get to see a little more action from the starters. This means that someone like Kirk Cousins could get an extra series or two. Obviously, the Ravens will be extremely cautious in trying to avoid injury.

One big thing to watch this weekend is the Packers wide receiver rotation. They seem to still be working out the depth chart with at least one starting spot up for grabs. Marqise Lee seems save as one starter with the competition coming in the slot and the other outside spot.

Keelan Cole should have an inside track as he was the team’s best receiver late last season. He’s someone with big-play ability while also capable of working the underneath routes.

DeDe Westbrook has drawn positive reviews during training camp and is someone who could work well out of the slot. Rookie D.J. Chark’s speed is something that can’t be matched by the other receivers on the roster. Ravens will absolutely want to take advantage of his skill set.

The Packers are in Minneapolis, Minnesota right now and are about to start Day 1 of joint practices against the Ravens.

The Packers will join their fellow we-were-one-game-away comPackers ahead of a Week 4 preseason matchup. The practice starts late (3:45 PM what?) but that’s good for those of us who get all our work in for the morning and can watch the practice unfold via tweets, videos, and live analysis.
